New Jersey

We left DWG early in the morning after a good breakfast (a lot of chocolate doughnuts and jolt cola) and started the climb out of the gap.  Icky and I decided to go for nothing less than 20 miles for 20 days straight.  About 6 miles later, we stopped at this scenic little spot called Sunfish Pond.  It was so nice there I wanted to stay.  3 hours later Icky managed to pull me away and we went on.

Could you imagine waking up to this every morning?  If that's not bad enough, instead of saying "good morning" he would flip me off.  Every morning.  I think he gave me the finger every morning for 150 straight days!  Anyway, we were moving pretty good through Jersey (which was surprisingly nice) and we were hanging out with walkabout.  (my wife had insulted him in Virginia by making fun of his home state, Kansas.  After all, what can you do in Kansas, there's nothing there!!)

Nice eh?  New Jersey took me by surprise.  The drought was pretty bad and we got by because people would leave water by the trail head.  One day, Icky, walkabout and I were at a shelter, and this group of kids (from a summer camp) came by and they were asking a million questions.  I felt like I was being interviewed by 60 minutes.  Later that night, I thought they we messing with our packs, but it turned out to be a skunk!  In the morning, we opened up the bear box and spread their food on the ground, then we convinced them we fought off a bear.  These kids provided a lot of entertainment.  They were like 13 or 14 years old.  One girl said "My stomach hurts" and then another girl commented "maybe your pregnant!" That was funny... oh yeah, the next day when we were hiking some girl fell and rolled 20 feet.  Icky almost collapsed laughing.  It's the small things that are funny when you've been in the woods for 4 months.
